How does your organisation manage its expertise? Traditionally, HR systems tackle this issue first by managing the experts themselves and then by 'attaching' each person to a formal list of skills and competencies. 

The emergence of Knowledge Management in the mid '90s recognised the traditional 'database' approach as inadequate and numerous projects tackled this 'yellow pages' issue, mostly with disappointing results. The point of failure is often the link between a person - the expert - and what he/she knows - the expertise. 

The part- EC funded LORE project addresses this issue in an altogether more promising way. LORE uses HR information - such as operational structures, processes, projects, skills and competencies - as the cornerstone of a system able to keep track of expertise demonstrated in day-to-day work. 

The KM tools within LORE then monitors the expertise as employees exhibit it in their writing and provides services based on what it finds. For example, LORE notifies the HR manager that someone's CV record could be out of date. Several alert functions provide the user with a news service able to keep person up to date with events in the topics he or she is interested in, plus news about the domain, company and industry in which he works. 

These capabilities go beyond the boundaries of conventional information and document management. Integrates an HR Management System from Cézanne Software with language-based knowledge management tools from Sopheon. 

Managing expertise can be achieved in a cost-effective and reliable way, without asking staff to fill in CV records. LORE will demonstrate not only how to capture the data, but how to exploit it for the benefit of the employee and the HR professional.
